Queen Mary steps in as regent in King Frederik’s absence

Queen Mary of Denmark has stepped in as regent for the first time since the coronation earlier this year.
Mary, 52, took on the role as head of the monarchy, while King Frederik was abroad and Queen Margrethe recovered following her hospitalisation.
Regent is a role that requires a person to step in to govern the state when the monarch isn’t able to perform their duties.

Queen Margrethe was discharged from hospital in Copenhagen on Friday, leaving Rigshospitalet with her arm in a plaster and wearing a neck brace.
The Danish royal household confirmed the 84-year-old suffered injuries as a result of her fall at home in Fredensborg Castle on Wednesday evening, prompting the two-night stay in hospital.
“Queen Margrethe was hospitalised on Wednesday evening after a fall, which unfortunately resulted in damage around the cervical vertebrae and a fracture of the left hand,” a translation of the royal press release stated.
Mary and Frederik’s eldest child Crown Prince Christian, 18, acted as regent in January when he signed his first law during his father’s trip to Poland.
In 2019, when she was Crown Princess, Mary signed a declaration that allowed her to act as regent.

“As acting regent, The Crown Princess will, from now on, be able to attend to The Queen’s duties as head of state when The Queen and The Crown Prince are prevented from doing so, for example during a stay abroad,” an official announcement at the time stated.
With this, the Australian-born royal became the second non-Dane to act as regent following Queen Ingrid.
Frederik and Mary will continue their accession tour next month, the Danish royal household has revealed.
The royal couple will make their way to Germany for two days of engagements on October 21 and 22.

“In continuation of early summer’s state visit to Sweden and Norway, the King and Queen continue the trip to Denmark’s neighbouring countries in October,” a translated version of the press release state.
“Denmark and Germany are closely linked through a strong co-operation across the border, both when it comes to trade, green transition and security policy.”
The couple will head to the German capital, Berlin, as well as make a visit to the town Schleswig-Holstein, which is a border town in the north shared by both countries.
The pair will be welcomed to Berlin by the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and his wife Elke Büdenbender.
